In India, using a defective vehicle that may pose a danger to oneself or other road users is prohibited. Any vehicle that is not in proper working condition, has faulty brakes, lights, or steering, or is otherwise not roadworthy is considered defective.
If a motor vehicle is found to be defective and is being used on the road, the driver/owner of the vehicle may be fined. The fine amount may vary from state to state, but it can range from Rs. 500 to Rs. 5,000 or more depending on the type of violation.
