It is compulsory to pay road tax in Jharkhand. It is a one-time payment and can be paid either quarterly or annually. Vehicle owners can make the payment of road tax at the time of registering their vehicle at the concerned zonal Regional Transport Office (RTO). Jharkhand RTO charges up to 6% of the vehicle price (excluding GST) as road tax. Road tax needs to be paid so that the state government can maintain and improve the quality of road connectivity while providing security for travellers. If the vehicle owner fails to pay road tax in time, they will be penalized up to 100% of the road tax amount.
Jharkhand RTO is responsible for registering vehicles, issuing and renewals of driver licenses, controlling pollution, and implementing road safety rules and regulations in the state. There are over 25 RTO offices in Jharkhand headed by the Transport Commissioner of the state’s transportation department. Each RTO is assigned a unique code that helps in identifying its jurisdiction and location.
