By the Punjab Motor Vehicle Taxation Act of 1924, the state government levies road tax on residents who purchase vehicles in the state. The road tax framework in Punjab is a key component of the state’s transportation structure. Road tax is a mandatory charge imposed on vehicles plying on roads in Punjab, contributing to the maintenance and development of the state’s road infrastructure and related amenities.
The transport department of Punjab, with its RTO, manages all vehicle-related operations such as vehicle registration, driver licensing, renewals, permits, and the administration of road safety regulations. An important aspect of RTO Punjab is the allocation of unique RTO codes to various geographical divisions/jurisdictions within the state. There are over 90 RTOs in Punjab with their respective RTO codes. These codes play a crucial role in streamlining the vehicle registration process, ensuring effective administration, and facilitating the smooth movement of vehicles across Punjab’s diverse topography.
