In India, it is mandatory for certain categories of vehicles to carry a fire extinguisher. The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and subsequent amendments make it mandatory for all commercial vehicles, including buses, trucks, taxis, and auto-rickshaws, to carry a fire extinguisher.
If a commercial vehicle is found to be without a fire extinguisher, the driver/owner of the vehicle may be fined. The fine amount may vary from state to state, but it can range from Rs. 500 to Rs. 5,000 or more depending on the type of violation.
